Avram Grant promised attacking football when he became manager. Not many believed him nor trust that he can command the dressing room which is fiercely loyal to Mourinho. Now, six weeks into the job, Grant proves that he is not as useless as everyone made him out to be.
His fifth consecutive victory was a 6-0 rout over third placed Manchester City. Surprisingly, he left out Shaun Wright Phillips and Malouda who have contributed four goals this season.
Frank Lampard, standing in as captain for John Terry, was the inspiration behind the victory. He drove the team forward like he did with two assists in the 2-0 win over Middlesbrough.
He laid on first-half goals for Michael Essien and Drogba with through passes into City’s defence. Chelsea never won by a six-goal margin under Mourinho in the league but they went on the rampage after the break with Drogba, Joe Cole, Salomon Kalou and Shevchenko demolishing City’s defence.
Eriksson apologized to the fans: “We totally forgot how to defend today. If you lose 6-0, nothing has gone right. We have to do much better. I’m sorry for the fans.”
Some credit for the revival of Chelsea has to go to assistant coach, ten Cate, who introduced a cavalier approach in Barcelona. For the time being, everyone is happy, Avramovich is beaming and speculation of Stamford Bridge falling down has abated. If they keep on winning, the influence of Mourinho will fade away into distant memory.
